We Come To Follow

“Come, follow Me, Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.” – Matthew 4:19.

Now we savor the word after ‘come’ – follow. Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ invites us to follow Him. This word also adds depth to what He meant by ‘come’. Coming to Jesus is not the end but the beginning. After coming to Jesus, we follow Him. We come to follow.

Even ‘follow’ is a word that invites intimacy. Following indicates proximity and closeness. How then can we follow if we can’t see? How then can we follow if we are miles apart? In simple terms, Jesus’ invitation is to become His apprentice. What craft is Jesus teaching us, His apprentices? The craft of redemption and transformation. The artistry of turning death into new life. His obedience to the will of the Father to conquer death through death.
Prayer: Our Father, You have sent us Your Son who then invited us to follow Him as He obeys You and fulfill Your will in the world. Continue Your transforming work in us through the Holy Spirit so that we grow in the likeness of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen
